Introducing
the Winterm Family of Microsoft Windows Terminals
Winterm
terminals deliver the performance, security and reliability of a Microsoft
Windows NT Server, running 16- and 32-bit applications written for Windows
3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT, without the need for high-end PCs on each
desktop. By delivering the best attributes of shared host and client/server
computing models to large and small installations, Winterm windows
terminals dramatically expand the choices for using Windows applications.
The
first cost-effective Intranet access devices, Winterm Windows terminals
are more advanced than character terminals, more efficient than X Terminals,
and superior to diskless PCs. Winterm terminals are plug-and-play
compatible with popular multiuser Windows NT application servers, providing
a true Windows display. Up to ten seats can be supported on a single 75
MHz Pentium PC; more with faster Pentium or multi-processor systems.
Winterm
terminals use an efficient protocol to communicate with the PC or server
executing the applications. It communicates display information to the
terminal, and carries back keyboard and mouse data using a high-speed
RS-232 serial connection or an optional network interface.
Winterm
terminals have built-in support for the most popular communications and
network protocols, including TCP/IP with DNS and DHCP, and PPP for direct
connection to networks and Internet service providers.
Mainframe
and UNIX Users Get the Applications They Need
Winterm
terminals can supplement a mainframe or UNIX system to deliver Windows
applications. Rather than adding PCs for each desk, add a single multiuser
Windows NT application server, and Winterm terminals for each user.
This provides access to Windows productivity applications, custom applications,
e-mail and scheduling, and Internet applications. To complete the picture,
Wyse offers optional server software with incremental ASCII and ANSI character
terminal personalities to cleanly integrate these data resources.
Secure
Access to Resources in a Networked Environment
Winterm
terminals are a low-cost, flexible way to add secure local, home, or branch
office seats to a networked environment. Simply include a supported multiuser
Windows NT application server somewhere on the network. Then, connect
Winterm terminals to the network anywhere, even in branch offices
via WANs to deliver high performance with secure access to network applications
and resources, including those on UNIX hosts, mainframes, NetWare servers,
printers, PCs, and other services.
Better
Than Diskless PCs
Winterm
terminals are a better solution than diskless PCs in four ways: First,
they deliver real Windows NT capability and application compatibility
for the widest choice and greatest system reliability. Second, application
performance is not limited by the client CPU, eliminating client CPU upgrades
and client replacements. Third, Winterm terminals don't need expensive
memory upgrades to accommodate large applications or operating system
updates. And fourth, there is no dependence on booting from a network,
so startup is quick and reliable.
More
Cost Effective
Terminals
provide a more cost-effective way to deliver Windows applications: With
a cost per seat dramatically lower than personal computers or X Terminals,
and improved ease-of-use and reliability, Winterm terminals reduce
the expense of acquisition, maintenance, and help-desk functions. They
don't need frequent CPU or memory upgrades as applications change, so
long term cost of ownership is stable and predictable. As a true application
display terminal, Winterm terminals don't rely on disk drives or
battery powered CMOS memory, reducing a major cause of "help-desk"
costs. Training costs are reduced too, because novice users can't accidentally
make changes or add software that would crash their system.
Improved
Ease-Of-Use and Security
Winterm
terminals deliver the ease-of-use of Windows applications, and more. At
power-up, the terminal can automatically place the user into a Windows
session, an application, or display custom messages indicating the user's
options -- accepting keyboard or mouse input as the response. As the superior
solution for deploying security-sensitive applications, Winterm
terminals include built-in multilevel security to ensure that only authorized
personnel can access the server and network resources. Security works
with Windows NT-based functions to grant users access only to authorized
applications and data files. Telecommuters enjoy the advanced support
for modem dialing and connection features that simplify their corporate
access from home or remote offices.
A
Smart Alternative With New Benefits
Winterm
terminals make Windows applications available at more locations than ever
before. On the most crowded desktop, dustiest warehouse or most accessible
bank teller window, Winterm terminals offer the combination of small
footprint, quiet operation, and ability to withstand a harsh environment
-- with higher security, reliability and ease-of-use than other devices.
Mean time between failures is up to four times longer than a PC and monitor.
As
the first Intranet- and Internet-compatible windows terminal devices,
Winterm terminals deliver on the promise of low-cost access to these
exciting new communications and information technologies, all with the
demonstrated benefits of a simple, quiet, reliable, terminal device. A
unique benefit of Winterm terminals is location independence --
the ability to access an individual's data, with individual desktop layout,
applications, and icons, from any Winterm terminal -- so users are
no longer "chained" to a specific PC. Also, administrators can
mirror or "shadow" any user's terminal, monitoring or taking
remote control, for more effective user training or remote technical support.
For
transaction processing applications like database access, accounting,
banking, and point-of-sale, Winterm terminals are the smartest choice
for performance, data security and control. For productivity and specialized
applications in a business environment, Winterm terminals provide
low-cost, flexible, central administration of computing options for local
and remote users. And for telecommuters or home based users, Winterm
terminals offer an exciting new way to access Windows and legacy applications
residing anywhere in the world, over asynchronous, Internet, or ISDN connections.
