Within each switch is a non-blocking switch fabric that provides full wire-speed Layer 3 and Layer 2 switch performance at all times. In each instance, the backplane capacity of the switch is greater than the aggregation of all its ports, so data is not lost - even when the network load requires all ports to deliver full gigabit bandwidth.

All Extreme switches include the ExtremeWare™ standards-based software suite. ExtremeWare supports a multitude of enterprise-class routing and management features:

• Wire-Speed IP Routing using OSPF, RIP and RIP v2 protocols
• IGMP v2 and IGMP snooping for IP multicast control and legacy router interoperability
• DVMRP and PIM Dense Mode to control routing of IP multicast traffic
• VLAN switching via IEEE 802.1Q tagging and IEEE 802.1D-1998 priority levels
• Extensive management and monitoring using HTTP, SNMP and RMON

Whether used for enterprise desktops, LAN segments, server farms or the network core, Extreme switches provide an improvement in network performance with switched Wire-Speed IP Routing at Layer 3, as well as wire-speed switching at Layer 2. Our switches interoperate with all existing standards-based hardware and software.

To take advantage of ExtremeWare's value-added features, default settings enable the network manager to establish policies for traffic prioritization, bandwidth allocation and congestion control. Out of the box and into the network, Extreme switches meet the new requirements for the third wave of LAN switching.
