TEXAS 37, (3) NEBRASKA 27
ST LOUIS -- Third-ranked Nebraska saw its hopes of an
unprecedented third straight national championship squashed by
Texas, which used three touchdown runs by Priest Holmes and two
key passes by James Brown to stun the Cornhuskers, 37-27, in the
inaugural Big 12 Conference title game. The loss will keep
Nebraska (10-2) from a date with top-ranked Florida State in the
Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2. The Cornhuskers could possibly have claimed
the national title with a win in the Sugar Bowl and a loss by
unbeaten Arizona State in the Rose Bowl.
"We didn't play with quite the intensity," Nebraska coach Tom
Osborne said.
Brown, who earlier in the week brazenly guaranteed that the
Longhorns would win by three touchdowns, threw a 66-yard scoring
pass to Wane McGarity to give Texas a 30-27 lead with 8:53 to
play. McGarity made an over-the-shoulder catch over the
outstretched hand of Nebraska's Mike Minter near the sideline,
then turned upfield and ran 35 yards into the end zone.
The touchdown pass was just a prelude to an even more dramatic
play by the Longhorns. On 4th-and-inches from their own 28, Texas
chose to go for it. Brown rolled to his left and threw a 61-yard
pass to a wide-open Derek Lewis. Holmes then scored on an 11-yard
run with 1:51 to play for the final margin, sending Texas (7-5)
into the bowl alliance for the second straight year. The
Longhorns likely will play in either the Orange Bowl or Fiesta
Bowl.
Holmes carried nine times for 120 yards, including a six-yard TD
run late in the third quarter as Texas regained the lead at
24-23. Holmes also had a 61-yard touchdown run in the second
quarter. Brown completed 19-of-28 passes for 353 yards, with
Michael Adams catching six for 92 yards. Phil Dawson added field
goals of 49, 30 and 47 yards for Texas, which has won five
straight contests after losing four times in a five-game span.
Nebraska's DeAngelo Evans ran for 130 yards on 32 carries with
three TDs. His 23-yard touchdown run tied the score at 17-17 late
in the second quarter. Scott Frost completed 15-of-24 passes for
155 yards for the Cornhuskers, who had won their previous nine
games overall and their last 31 against conference opponents.
