Our Heritage
The first congregations of the RCUS, consisting mostly of German
immigrants, were formed in 1725 by John Philip
Boehm, and were located just north of Philadelphia. From then until the
early part of the twentieth century, the old
German Reformed Church grew to be one of the largest denominations in the
country. We operated several colleges,
seminaries, orphanages and church papers. Sadly, however, most of our
congregations participated in the 1934
merger with the Evangelical Synod of North America; the resulting
megachurch merged later with the Christian
Congregational Churches to form the United Church of Christ. The few
congregations that wanted to retain Reformed
distinctives and refused to believe that bigger is better incorporated in
1940 as the continuing RCUS.
Our Doctrine
By mutual consent we have also adopted as subordinate standards the
following great creeds of the Reformation: the
Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession of Faith and the Canons of
Dort. We believe these to be the most
accurate expressions of Biblical Christianity that the church has ever
produced. Each of our ministers is required to
subscribe to their teachings without reservation.
