Our Heritage
The Reformed Church in the United States (RCUS) traces its history through the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century. At that time, the Lord raised up such men as John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingliand John Knox to reform the church according to the Word of God.

The first congregations of the RCUS, consisting mostly of German immigrants, were formed in 1725 by John Philip Boehm, and were located just north of Philadelphia. From then until the early part of the twentieth century, the old German Reformed Church grew to be one of the largest denominations in the country. We operated several colleges, seminaries, orphanages and church papers. Sadly, however, most of our congregations participated in the 1934 merger with the Evangelical Synod of North America; the resulting megachurch merged later with the Christian Congregational Churches to form the United Church of Christ. The few congregations that wanted to retain Reformed distinctives and refused to believe that bigger is better incorporated in 1940 as the continuing RCUS.

Our Doctrine
We believe the Bible, consisting of the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired, inerrant and infallible Word of the living God. As such it is our final standard for

By mutual consent we have also adopted as subordinate standards the following great creeds of the Reformation: the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession of Faith and the Canons of Dort. We believe these to be the most accurate expressions of Biblical Christianity that the church has ever produced. Each of our ministers is required to subscribe to their teachings without reservation.

Our Distinctives
Every denomination has its own unique characteristics that distinguish it from others. Here are a few of ours:

Six day creation
The sanctity of human life
Male leadership
The catechization of covenant youth
Not using pictures of Christ

Our Ministry
Today, we have about forty congregations in the RCUS, located mostly in the midwest but with a few in California. Our home mission works include: Sioux Falls and Rapid City, SD; Lodi, Yuba City and Modesto, CA. We also cooperate with the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Liberated) to assist the Reformed Confessing Church of Zaire. And we are also members of the International Conference of Reformed Churches and the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council.
